Year 5 Super Survival Day

20 September 2016 (by Helen Wilson (hwilson))

As part of our Earth Explorers topic, Year 5 spent a wonderful day yesterday at Braeside Education Centre, learning how to survive in the wild!

Under the expert guidance of Keith Browning at the Centre, we followed in the footsteps of explorers like Bear Grylls, and learned how to construct shelters using a mixture of natural and man-made materials, how to make fires properly and how to light them using flints and steels - all in very wet conditions! But… did this dampen our spirits? NO! We had a super time getting wet and muddy, and were rewarded with delicious toasted marshmallows, bread on sticks and even some excellent venison and vegetable stew, all cooked over open fires! Keith also shared some other fascinating and important survival tips with us, including which edible things can be foraged in the wild in this area. All the children should be really proud of the positive and enthusiastic way in which they engaged with all the activities, and we couldn’t have done it without the fantastic help of 6 equally intrepid mums and two wonderful TAs!
