Dear Year 6 Parents and Carers,

We hope you had an enjoyable summer holiday and are ready for a fun-filled, action-packed Autumn Term.

We are incredibly excited to be starting Term 1 with an exciting new twist. St Mary's has implemented some changes over the summer break, and will be embracing a new astronomical theme. Our classes no longer have numbers and are named after spacecraft, probes and exploration rovers.

We have re-named our house teams, but are still allocated to the same colours associated with school events like sport's day. The new house names and colours are: JupiterSaturnNeptune and Mars

Throughout the Autumn Term, Year 6's topic based work will be based around 'Great Britons'.  In the first week, the children will experience a Harry Potter Day, as we look at what makes J.K. Rowling one of our most popular authors. We will then move on to look at other significant Britons  and explore the values that they have shown in their lives.

In Maths, we will be recognising, comparing and ordering  numbers up to ten million as we work on place value. After this, we will be building on their knowledge of the four operations using fluency and problem solving.

Homework
By Year 6 your child should be fluent at their times tables and related division facts up to 12 x12.

There are new homework books that will be coming home. There is Reading booklet  that replaces the old Reading Records and also a separate Spelling booklet that will have your child's spellings for the week. As we are in the last year of primary school, there may also be an extra task depending on the week's learning.  Please read the instructions for homework carefully, particularly when it states how long we expect you to be doing it for and when it is due in.

Whilst we encourage our older pupils to become increasingly more independent in their final year at school, we still encourage a close relationship with parents and carers, so please feel free to contact us and we can then arrange a mutually convenient time to discuss any queries or concerns in a timely manner.

PE

Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit in school at all times, that it meets uniform expectations and that it fits. This is to include trainers and also non-hooded tracksuit! PE for Year 6 takes place on Mondays/Tuesdays and Fridays.

Kind Regards

The Year 6 Team
